According to "Car and Driver," Charlottesville has “one of motoring’s most divine spectacles:” Skyline Drive. “It’s arguably the most scenic drive east of the Mississippi.”
According to the article, Charlottesville is home to 218 days of sunshine a year and 16 city traffic cops.

The Hook: Booze in the blender - Jimmy Buffett rocks Charlottesville
"The ginormous parking lots around the Arena were plastered with a special brand of tailgaters: guys in hula skirts and coconut bras, girls with shark pasties. Many sporting parrot, crab, and shark hats and some in shark and pirate costumes, all downing flagons of Caribbean-pastel margaritas mixed to the tunes of Jimmy and whining 12-volt blenders."
Good write-up of the Buffett show in Cville:

CNN: America's cool college towns
"The music scene was fertile here B.D.M.B -- that is, before the Dave Matthews Band, which formed in Charlottesville in the early 1990s."

Our new guy: Tom Scott (Director Interactive Media)
One of the “new” arrivals to Monticello Media, Tom is a 28 year radio vet with extensive background as an Operations Manager, Program Director, Promotions Director, News Director, and announcer, as well as having Non-Traditional Revenue and Sales experience.
“All of my previous experience has prepared me to incorporate all parts of our business into the 6 Monticello Media station websites. In addition to his work on the Monticello Media websites, Tom can be heard weekday mornings from 6-9am on TOM @ 107.5.
Born in northeastern PA, Tom spent his entire career circling central PA, most of that time in the home of Little League Baseball, Williamsport, PA, before heading south in July. “This part of Virginia is beautiful…We’ve traveled through the Charlottesville area before, and the opportunities for our family are too good to pass up!”
He loves music, history, travel and antiques and is doing everything he can to enjoy all of the local experiences that include those pastimes. Tom, his wife and 2 of their 6 children make their new home in Greene County, and look forward to the Fall season with its beautiful colors along the Blue Ridge.

Meet Walter Scott (Monticello Media's BIGGEST Tarheel fan!)
Walter was born and raised in Charlottesville and is a proud graduate of the Albemarle High School Class of 2000. He attended Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia and has also lived in Harrisonburg. Walter’s son, Walter Scott the 4th, was born on July 4, 2006 and “is an absolute joy to be around.”
Walter is a fan of music at its core, not just a particular genre; his mp3 player is filled with everything from Jay-Z to Quiet Riot to Jackson Browne. He enjoys sports and follows them religiously. Walter is a fan of the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Indians and The North Carolina Tarheels. He also enjoys working out, playing softball, using his DVR to the fullest of its capabilities, a well constructed libation and laughing as hard and as often as possible.
Walter’s three favorite movies are Coming To America, Pulp Fiction, and Gladiator. His favorite quotes are:
“The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits.”- Einstein,
“The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.”- Samuel Johnson, and
“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” -Winston Churchill

Meet Our Personalities: Tom Morgan
Tom Morgan, “Your Wake – Up Call” on WCYK (along with Pam Garrison), started his career in radio at WJBC in Knoxville (if you want to call college radio the start of your career). He served as Program Director there for two years. Prior to graduation, he was awarded the Media Communication Award for Excellence at WJBC. During his junior year in college, he worked Saturday mornings at WOKI, "The River." This position later turned into weekends/swing, to nights, and then finally, afternoon drive. During this time, he also worked at CMA Award winning WIVK, where he got his country radio start.
After a year of full-fledged country in East Tennessee, he finally came home to Virginia at WCYK, where he did afternoons from November 2006, until a few months ago. His life-long dreams are to tour Europe, interview Bono, and have a spot on VH1's "I love the 80's.” Tom is also actively involved with St. Jude Children's Hospital, the Red Cross, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. At one point, he was even "arrested" to raise money for the MDA and Jerry's Kids.

He enjoys playing video games, meeting country music stars, traveling, talking radio, and fishing with his old man on the James River. Wake up with Tom and Pam on WCYK every weekday morning, 5am – 10am.

Steve Walker Fascinated With His Voice
Steve Walker hosts mornings at “generations 102.3, the music for your generation.” He tells me that he has been fascinated by his own voice since he was a teenager. He found talking to his two children and wife at home just wasn’t enough to satisfy his urge to hear his voice, so he took to being on the radio, bothering thousands at a time. Steve has been waking folks up on the radio since 1978, and the only downside he proclaims is getting up at 3:30am. We’re glad that he does!
Steve’s other passions, besides family, include motorcycles, shooting, hunting, cutting firewood, and work. Look for him on that motorcycle on sunny days.
Steve also has a love for helping out charities. One of his favorites is giving blood. A motorcycle accident causing him to need four pints of blood to stay alive got him focused on blood donation. Steve has since repaid his debt ten-fold.

PJ Idolizes Charlottesville
PJ Styles hosts afternoons and is Program Director at Hot 101.9. He was born and raised in Richmond, VA, and lived in Chicago for awhile (this is how we do it in "the Chi!"). PJ is a JMU alum and a big Duke Football fan! He bleeds UVA orange and blue, and pulls for the Cubbies, saying, “Shut up, I know about the World Series streak.” And did you see him on TV every week during the American Idol season?
You’ll find PJ at watering holes in Cville (St. Martens, Timberwood Grill, Shebeen, Wild Wing Cafe, and yes, TGI Fridays!). In his spare time, PJ enjoys weight lifting, tennis, kickball (it rocks!), and watching crappy reality shows on TV.
Outside of Cville; he likes anywhere there's a beach, especially the Bahamas and the Outer Banks. Give him sand and surf and he’s a happy camper.
In the pet department there is one who has his heart: His Boston Terrier, Wrigley. Wrigley likes anything he can chew, including shoelaces, remotes, tissues, hands, and hair. PJ says,”His motor never stops, trust me.”
PJ’s favorite music NOT on Hot 101.9 includes Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, and pretty much all hip hop from the 90s.
PJ clams to have recently cleaned up his diet, and is now eating healthy most of the time. With that being said, pizza is his favorite, although he doesn’t get to eat it often anymore. Ah, the sacrifices we make to stay in shape!
PJ’s pet peeves include people who drive in the rain without their headlights on (it's a law damn it!), people who don't give him "the wave" when he lets them cross the street in front of his car (acknowledge his generosity with a courtesy wave!), people who chew ice (he hates that sound), and his main pet peeve is people who bring their babies to restaurants, sit in the smoking section, and puff away. His question is, “Maybe your 9 month old doesn't want a cigarette, did you think of that??”
I am proud to know PJ and thrilled that he makes Monticello Media his home base. Email PJ at: pj@1019hot.com.

Mark Milleson Rocks
Mark Milleson, middays on Your Country 99.7 WCYK, claims he was born in South Florida and raised by a pod of dolphins...actually, he was born and raised in Orlando. After a brief stint in northern Virginia, he moved to our beautiful city of Charlottesville at 12 years old (when the only thing on Rt. 29 was Barracks Rd. and Fashion Square). He completed school (and somehow got elected as Senior Class President at A.H.S.), and has lived here most of his life.
Mark is an avid sports fan, a HUGE DOLPHINS FAN, and a diehard Hoo's Fan as well! He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree and occasionally paints commissioned original watercolors. Mark has a wonderful family and church family. He loves the outdoors - especially the beach and fishing! On the tube, "24", "Nip Tuck" and "Fox News" are musts, and a few reality shows are guilty pleasures.
Mark’s musical tastes run the gamut from Sinatra and Bennett to Bluegrass, Blues and Hip-Hop. He grew up on and gravitates towards Country, Classic Rock and some Pop tunes, music that stands the test of time and turns up on American Idol each season. After getting involved with the crazy radio lifestyle in the mid-90's, he has been on the air in the area ever since. He has seen and introduced countless great acts; Mark has also been fortunate enough to meet and/or interview legends such as Peter Frampton, The Allman Brothers, The Fifth Dimension, B.B. King and many others.

Lisa Plays Radio
Lisa Allen, our afternoon DJ and Program Director on WCYK, grew up in South Florida. While other kids were swimming and playing tennis, she would hang out at home with her huge record collection, playing guitar and singing along with her favorite tunes. She really wanted to be a rock star, but soon realized that her guitar playing and singing weren’t very good, so she’d better come up with a different plan.
After high school, Lisa enrolled in Broward Community College to pursue an accounting degree, but still wanted to be involved in music. While attending classes, she became friends with one of the personalities at her favorite radio station, and after completing her degree, decided to attend the same broadcasting school that her friend attended. Maybe she couldn’t sing, and couldn’t play guitar very well (or keyboards, or banjo, or violin… all instruments she abandoned along the way), but she knew she could play records like a pro…plus she had a vast knowledge of all kinds of music to share with anyone who would listen. Radio became her new career goal.

She soon landed her first on-air job in the Florida Keys and never looked back, working in Panama City, West Palm Beach and Miami. As much as she loved being on the air, she wanted more responsibility and authority, so she took a job as Program Director in Augusta, Maine. More Program Director positions followed in Columbia, MO, Frederick, MD and now at WCYK. Lisa enjoys playing guitar (when nobody is listening); cooking, reading and taking long walks with her dog on a nice day.

Congratulations to WCHV's Melissa Neeley
Monticello Media began operating our six radio stations, four streaming stations, and six websites in Charlottesville almost two years ago. We did so with a strong commitment to local news, expecially on WCHV News/Talk. Joe Thomas came on board early on with his fabulous morning show. Melissa Neeley joined us as News Director and we added an FM signal (94.1 FM) to our 1260 AM broadcast. In short, we built a market leading news and talk operation.
Melissa was nominated for an award for Best Newscast by her peers at the Virginia Association of Broadcasters. I want to publicly congratulate Melissa, and thank her and Joe for the fabulous work they have done (and continue to do!) in making WCHV News/Talk the best news/talk station in Charlottesville.
And you ain't seen nothin' yet!

Meet Our Personalities: He's the Dude
Kerry James, our very own “Dude” at TOM@107.5, plays “Anything, Anytime” … a philosophy on which Kerry has lived his whole life. This could explain why he’s still single.
Kerry grew up in Staunton and moved to Richmond at 18 to attend Virginia Commonwealth University. He spent six “glorious” years there (all of them undergrad) studying Theatre and Mass Communications. Ask Kerry what he remembers most about college, and he says, “It’s the only time in your life when you get unlimited food and sleep……oh, yeah, I guess you gotta go to class every now and then, too.”
Despite what he says, he did go to class, and one day on his way to Kegorator Construction 101, he discovered the student radio station. “This has to be more fun than sleepin’”, thought KJ. Sure enough it was, and he was hooked.
When Kerry finished VCU in December of ’96, he embarked upon his career in broadcasting. For nine years, he worked in Richmond radio and TV including news and airborne traffic reporting – picking up acting gigs when he could get them. Kerry moved to Charlottesville a few years ago which led him to spin country music. He’s on afternoons on TOM@107.5 now. Over the years, it truly has been a little bit of “Anything, Anytime” for the Ol’ KJ.

Middays with Murph on Hot 101.9
Erik (“Murph”) Murphy hosts Middays with Murph on Hot 101.9 (WHTE). Murph is a HUGE fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He thinks Kirk Cameron is the greatest actor of all time. He likes Grizzly Bears, but dislikes for Polar Bears. Erik likes Las Vegas, playing kickball on Sundays, and watching the Simpsons and The Office. He also enjoys reading “Choose Your Own Adventure Books” with indecisive people.
If you like Paris Hilton, you probably won’t get along with Eric. If you know Jessica Alba or Megan Fox, then he would like to hang out with you sometime. He likes Haikus, Carnies, and especially, writing Haikus about Carnies. Murph has great friends, and is always eager to meet new and interesting people. His biggest heroes are his Mom and Dad, and that masked stranger who pulled him from the burning building.

"Tom@107.5" takes a listener request from Delta # 1150
This is a cool story about how radio (and Monticello Media) is embracing the new, digital technologies. As you know if you follow this blog, we run an Interactive Request Show Friday and Saturday nights on "Tom @ 107.5". Tom takes requests via phone, email, Facebook and Twitter; our DJ, Steve York, has authority to play anything requested, even if it is not in our library (a really BIG library) and he has to download it.
Last night, my friend Stephan Sloan was on Delta flight # 1150 listening to Tom's stream (unbeknownst to me). He emailed a song request to "Tom" and sent me a copy. I also happened to be listening to Tom. Steve got the email and immediately played the request, "Big Audio Dynamite Medecine Show" (which Steph confirmed on my Facebook page hearing in real time moments later from the plane). I think that might be a radio "first."
The times, they are a-changin'.

Meet our personalities: Pam Garrison
Pam Garrison anchors mornings on "Your Country 99.7, WCYK" along with Tom Morgan. She is one of seven children, number six, 3 girls and 4 boys. Pam grew up in Madison County, yes she's a Mountaineer. She graduated Madison County High School, and cites good country living.
Pam has two beautiful children, a daughter Brooke and a son Taylor, and so many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles that she says she has a family orchard, not a family tree. She's a newly wed to husband Randy, is a Fed Ex Driver.
She's lived in Albemarle County for 20 years, where she and Randy are very involved in their church. They love going to concerts and NASCAR Races and love being involved in our community; Pam's a member of the Charlottesville Dogwood Festival Committee.
When I've been out around the town with Pam, I am constantly amazed at the sheer number of fans who come up to say "hello." I think she knows everyone within a hundred miles of Charlottesville. We're thrilled to have her at Monticello Media.
Check out Pam at: http://country997.com/Pam-Garrison/1303505 (You can also access her blog and email from there).

Meet our personalities: Joe Thomas
Joe anchors 5am until 9am on WCHV, our news/talk station at 1260 AM and 94.1 FM. Joe is a 21-year radio vet who managed restaurants for six years before radio. As he puts it, he is "Father of three, husband of one (female) and proud survivor of the New York City Public school system."
His interests include auto racing, science fiction, basketball, and conservatism (though probably not in that order). Favorite movies are "Blade Runner" and "Running Man."
Favorite music: Ted Nugent, Joe Walsh, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Favorite books: "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "The Road to Mars."
If you enjoy news/talk from a local perspective, check out Joe Thomas on WCHV. You can join his Facebook fan club:

The Jefferson Area TeaParty is tomorrow (April 15) from 3pm until 6pm at the Charlottesville Downtown Mall. I have a hunch that our very own WCHV (1260 AM and 94.1 FM) morning show host Joe Thomas might be involved.

Charlottesville donates over $67,000 to St. Jude
A quick thanks to our community for donating over $67,000 to benefit St. Jude. Our Radiothon on WCYK brought in $5,000 more than last year in a very tough economy. Thankyou for your caring.
And a special thanks to our staff at Your Country 99.7; job well done!

The Mac McDonald Everyday Shop & Cafe Children's Golf Classic
Monticello Media is pleased to team up with Mac McDonald and Virginia Oil to present a golf tournament benefitting pediatric oncology at the UVA Children's Hospital. The tournament, to be played May 11th at the Keswick Club, will also feature Ladies Professional Golf Association star Morgan Pressel.
We are thrilled to have a local company like Virginia Oil and the Everyday Shop and Cafe join our efforts with our fundraising mission. Mac’s golf tournament is for a great cause and we want to do everything we can for the UVA Children’s Hospital. The Everyday Shop and Cafe has brought a lot of support to the table.
UVA Children’s Hospital is a leading center for children’s healthcare in the region, recording approximately 100,000 patient visits annually. Most of these children and their families come from the local community, from all levels of need and income. A sizeable percentage is treated for a variety of different childhood cancers.
Morgan Pressel, who will play a nine-hole exhibition the morning of May 11th prior to the tournament, has been a major supporter of cancer research. Her mother, Kathy, died five years ago from cancer complications and Pressel has worked with the American Cancer Society as well as St. Jude’s Hospital assisting with pediatric oncology research.
Tickets for the Pressel exhibition will go on sale soon and will be available at all Everyday Shop and Cafe locations. All proceeds from the exhibition and tournament will benefit pediatric oncology research at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital.

Darius Rucker put on a fabulous show
Darius Rucker put on a fabulous show tonight at the Paramount. The crowd was absolutely electric as he sang his hit singles (as heard on WCYK!) as well as some great covers (Hank Jr.'s "Family Tradition" and Prince's "Purple Rain") and, of course, some hits from Hootie and the Blowfish. If you get the chance to see him, do it.
Thanks to Pam Garrison (morning drive on "Your Country 99.7") and Lisa Allen (afternoon drive) for letting me tag along to the Meet & Greet.

A Brief Introduction
I am writing as the President of Monticello Media, our six station radio group in Charlottesville, VA. Monticello Media is "un-corporate" radio. It is owned by my wife (Loree) and I, and our partners, Paul and Suzanne Stone. We have no corporate office (unless you count my office at home).
We take our public service requirements very seriously. We believe in local radio. Local news, local entertainment, local information, local personalities, local public service. If it happens in Cville, we want to be a part of it. We believe that you can get music anywhere; it is other elements which make the difference and keep you coming back.
We have a great staff. You've probably been listening to many of our on-air personalities for years. We want to make a good thing even better. If you have ideas for improving our service to you, or listener and/or our advertiser, please let me know: georgereed@cvillestations.com.
And above all, keep listening!
